The beach has excellent surfing conditions and is a great place to watch the sun go down There are sun-loungers and umbrellas available for hire and lifeguards patrol the beach during the peak summer months. Access to the beach is via steps from the Marriott hotel and you will need to bring your own refreshments as there are no other beachside facilities here.
5km away from Praia D’El Rey is Baleal beach, a stretch of fine white sand between Peniche and the former Baleal Island which has now become joined to the mainland. This area is extremely popular with surfers and has a vibrant atmosphere that any teenagers in your party will love. The beach is lined with snack bars where you can buy basic meals and refreshments, with surfing lessons and equipment hire available. There are also banana boat rides on offer.
Obidos is a beautiful Medieval Portuguese town which has been classified as a National Monument and was traditionally the gift of the Kings of Portugal to their Queens. Totally enclosed by its ancient walls, the town has narrow cobbled streets lined with whitewashed houses adorned with flowers. You can try out a variety of water sports at the large Obidos Lagoon.
Nearby Peniche is renowned for its numerous fish restaurants where you can sample the local specialities of sea bass, sardine and shellfish. On the seafront at the edge of the town stands a 16th century fort which now contains a museum of local archaeology and crafts.
Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, is around an hour’s drive away and is a beautiful historic city with excellent shopping and entertainment facilities.
