Location

Quinta Marissa is set in the heart of rural Algarve, yet not remote as it is only 3km from the town of São Bartolomeu de Messines (known as simply Messines). Local restaurants are only 1km away, and the inland location makes Villa Madelena a great base from which to explore the unspoilt areas of the inland Algarve.

Messines is situated in a green valley, on the southern hills of the ‘Penedo Grande’ border. This small town has an attractive church dating back to the 16th century, and there is a weekly market. This historic town is worth a stroll around to uncover the culture and history.

15km away is the beautiful, ancient city of Silves, full of shops, restaurants and cafes.
Once a Moorish capital full of towering minarets, Silves has an impressive castle built from red sandstone. The castle is the largest in the Algarve and has 11 towers. From its ramparts there are stunning views over the city and the river Arade. Its streets are lined with an abundance of shops, restaurants and cafes and there are plenty of squares and churches to stroll around and explore.

The bustling Algarve coasted area of Albufeira is just 20km away. This sprawling town covers a huge area and boasts some of the finest, sandy beaches on the southern coast (the nearest of which is Galè beach). There’s plenty to see and something to suit everyone in Albufeira. During the day you can enjoy the sandy stretches of beach or browse the markets where local handicrafts and fresh goods are sold. In the evening, a wide variety of bars, restaurants and clubs fill the streets with people and life; locals sit on the terraces of traditional restaurants, the bars fill up with thirsty punters and all kinds of music drift across the air. You can admire the array of white yachts in the newly completed marina in the west. Alternatively, you could stroll around the Old Town and explore the maze of cobbled streets, past white-washed fishermen’s houses.

For those with kids, good attractions nearby include:
• Krazy World – a family attraction with a small zoo that has live animal shows throughout the summer and aims to inspire children about conservation. There is also a petting zoo (with camels and llamas!), pony rides and mini-golf so there’s enough to keep the whole family occupied for a day. Approx. 10km in Algoz.
• Aqualand Water Park – with plenty of slides and flumes to scream your way down and lazy rapids where you can float along in rubber rings. About 15km away in Alcantarilha.

In Detail

Approach

Quinta Marissa is modern, fully-equipped and spacious. Enjoying a great location in the heart of rural Algarve, its large shaded veranda has uninterrupted views stretching across the surrounding fertile valleys. This large white and pastel-painted villa has a garden that is well-designed to work with the natural camber of the land; with a sunken pool terrace below. A road leads along in front of Villa Madelena, and from here you turn off to a parking area and main entrance at the front of the villa.

Ground Floor

Quinta Marissa is a modern villa, simply decorated throughout with white walls and tiled floors – making it feel cool and airy even in the summer heat. From the main entrance hall, a hallway leads to the living room.
The light and cosy living room has patio doors at the side, opening to the barbecue terrace area. In the opposite corner is a large open fireplace with a white painted chimney. There is also a cabinet holding the satellite TV, DVD, CD and video players as well as a sofa, two armchairs and coffee table
A large open doorway leads through to the formal dining room which has a large rectangular table and chairs for ten. There is an attractive chandelier hanging from the ceiling and patio doors at the far end open on to the shaded terrace.
A door opens to the spacious and modern kitchen, tiled from floor to ceiling. The sides are fitted with attractive wooden units and a glossy worktop. There is a square breakfast table and four chairs in the centre, and a large integral sink within the worktop. Fully-equipped; this kitchen includes a dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, fridge/freezer, oven/hob, kettle, toaster and coffee machine. A side door opens to the villa gardens.
This modern villa has five well-appointed bedrooms; corridors lead off from the entrance hall to the different rooms. The master bedroom is furnished with a double bed, bedside tables, reading lamps and storage. A door opens to an en-suite tiled bathroom; there is a toilet, washbasin, mirror and Jacuzzi bath – great for those who like their baths with bubbles. Patio doors open on to the terrace where you can sit and savour your first cup of coffee in the morning Algarve sun.
Two further good-sized bedrooms are also fitted with double beds and have their own en-suite bathrooms with full bathtubs, over-bath shower, toilet and washbasins. The final two rooms are furnished with twin beds and have the use of a separate family bathroom, again with full bathtub, toilet and washbasin.

Outside

Patio doors open on to a large covered veranda that runs along the back of the villa. The elevated position affords lovely views across the layered green and brown countryside, over hills covered in olive groves. Here on the yellow and white terrace is a wooden garden table and chairs – ideal for long, lazy lunches in the shade. There is also a large brick-built barbecue area with a small sink just outside of the living room patio doors. The terrace continues to the side of the villa where a natural stone wall borders the garden and there are some areas of green lawn for the kids to run around on. The garden also features a few colourful shrubs and flowers dotted here and there.
Steps lead down through the natural stone walls to the sunken pool terrace. This sun-drenched area has the large private pool in the centre, with roman-ended integral steps to lead you gradually into the water. Lined around the poolside are sunloungers for lazing in the warm sun. As well as a garden table and chairs beneath a parasol, where you can enjoy a cool drink in the shade. From the other end of the pool terrace, steps lead up the gentle slope alongside the side of the villa towards the road at the front.
