This charming holiday villa is situated in the stylish residential area of Serra e Mar, about 8km west of Alvor, with Portimao around 7km to the east. The nearest restaurant is within walking distance and the exclusive Penina Golf resort is just 4km away, with its championship golf course and five star hotel and restaurant.
It takes about ten minutes to drive to Alvor, a former Roman port and Portuguese fishing village which retains much of its charm despite becoming a popular tourist destination in recent years. The quaint narrow streets are lined with bars and cafes and there is a beautiful 16th century parish church. The beach here is long and gently shelving with fine white sand and clear blue water. Understandably popular with families and small children, it is perfect for sunbathing and also offers a range of water sports to suit all tastes. If you would prefer something more private and peaceful, a drive around the coastline will reveal an array of pretty coves and inlets nestling below dramatic cliffs.
The nearby commercial town of Portimao is still a busy port and has extensive shopping and restaurant facilities. Boat excursions leave from the harbour here, which is a great way to explore the coast and perhaps catch a glimpse of dolphins following along behind. Lagos is the third largest town in the Algarve and you can still see the remains of its ancient wall and fortress guarding the harbour. Once the centre of trade between Portugal and Africa, its shipyards built the ‘Caravelas’ which was sailed by Henry the Navigator on his exploration voyages. Take a short boat excursion departing from Praia Dona Ana in Lagos, and you can view the spectacular rock formations and grottoes of the ‘Ponta da Piedade’.
The 18 hole golf course at Penina was constructed on former rice paddy fields and is a challenging flat course with strategically placed water hazards. Alto Golf, between Portimao and the coast has some elevated greens with superb sea views.
There are lots of other opportunities for leisure in the region from scuba diving to horseriding. Take a visit to one of the nearby water parks such as the Slide and Splash at Estombar near Lagao or Aqualand, reputedly Europe’s largest open air water park, around a half hour drive away at Alcantarilha.
