Location

Villa Paloma is situated in a peaceful residential area of Cala’n Porter. This coastal resort is located in the district of Alaior, along Menorca’s central southern coast. There are restaurants within walking distance (500m) and the sheltered, sandy beach and plenty of shops are close by. Whilst Villa Paloma enjoys a private garden and pool in a peaceful area, it is close to other villas and may not suit those looking for total seclusion.

Cala’n Porter is large resort by Menorcan standards, situated on the south coast in a magnificent setting on the cliffs above an expansive, sandy beach. The beach offers a large shore of soft sand, sheltered on three sides by cliffs. Behind the beach is an area of marshland home to large community of ducks. There are bars and restaurants at beach level, as well as sun beds, umbrellas and pedaloes for hire.
Up at the resort, there are shops selling everything from freshly baked pastries to brightly coloured souvenirs. There is also a weekly market held in the square. You will find bars and restaurants catering for every taste; many offering magnificent views across the bay. For the ultimate clubbing experience, don't miss The Caves of Xoroi; this unique club is built into the caves overlooking the beach. With incredible sea views, the club's dance floor overlooks the ocean and stands at 100m above the water.
Transport is well-organised at Cala’n Porter and is a good destination for those who prefer not to hire a car. There us a road train which runs around the resort and down to the beach during the day. The journey to and from the airport takes about 15 minutes, and the average price of a taxi for four people would be €20. There are also regular buses into the capital Mahon.

13km away is Mahon - the historic harbour capital of Menorca. This city offers a wide range of retail outlets, bars, cafes, and restaurants. There is also lively nightlife to be enjoyed when the sun goes down, with the largest concentration of lively clubs and bars to be found near the port. For those who love live music, Mahon port also has a number of Jazz clubs. By day, this historical port bustles with ships and yachts, where you can stroll for hours admiring the view. You will also find many buildings and ruins of architectural and historic interest, plus several museums detailing the island’s long history. The oldest relic is the Arch de San Roque, the only surviving remains of the fourteenth century wall that circled the town. There are seven buses a day into Mahon from Cala’n Porter (during the summer).

From Cala’n Porter you can see Mount Toro: the highest point on Menorca at 354m. For those who are interested in seeking spiritual inspiration or simply soaking up the culture, a trip to the Sanctuary of the Mare de Deu del Toro is worth a visit. Used today by a small community of nuns, the sanctuary offers a spiritual centre for Menorca and there are fantastic views across the North coast of the island, about a 45km journey.

In Detail

Approach

Villa Paloma is situated in the southern coastal resort of Cala’n Porter which is great for families as it has a sheltered, sandy beach and lots of amenities. This pretty-looking villa has white-washed walls, and red tiled roofs. From the lanes leading around the white-washed, you drive into a small parking area at the front of the villa. The front door opens into the light and airy living space.

Ground Floor

The cosy sitting room has an open fireplace on the far wall which has a tapered white chimney (typical to European villas). Here, there are also double doors opening to the covered section of pool terrace. The sitting room also has two sofas, a coffee table, satellite TV and DVD player.
A door leads through to the bright, modern kitchen where there is a range of white units and a grey worktop. To the right is a breakfast table with four chairs, and the kitchen is well-equipped with a free-standing fridge/freezer, oven with four-ring hob, microwave and washing machine. There is also a kettle, toaster and stainless steel sink beneath a sunny window overlooking the garden.
A door leads off the living room to the first bedroom which is fitted with twin beds, bedside tables and a fitted wardrobe for storage. The second bedroom is furnished in a very similar way, also with twin beds. A set of bunkbeds are found in the third, children’s bedroom. There are three bathrooms; two with full bathtubs, and one with a shower cubicle. All of them are tiled and feature a toilet and washbasin beneath a wall mirror.

Outside

Patio doors open from the living room onto a covered dining area, beneath a small porch-like structure. There is a garden table and chairs for long, lazy lunches in the shade. The private teardrop-shaped pool has a small section at one end where integral steps take you gradually into the blue waters. Around the poolside there are sunloungers for relaxing in the sunshine. The circular garden that surrounds Villa Paloma is bordered by leafy green hedges and tall spiky palms.
