Vilamoura is a well known and favourite European golfing destination and there are six world class golf courses in the resort, all of which are within easy reach. The resort also offers other outstanding sport and entertainment facilities. These include tennis, horse riding, water sports, and even clay pigeon shooting. Nightlife centres around the huge lively marina, which forms the focal point of the resort. There are numerous shops, bars and restaurants here not to mention the cinema and the casino.
Vilamoura means, literally ‘Moorish Town’. Today, its most popular attractions are the stylish marina and two sandy beaches, Marina and Falesia. The beaches have fine white sand, restaurants, bars and toilet/shower facilities so you can spend all day relaxing beside the sea in comfort. Windsurfing board hire and water ski-ing are available during the main summer months and lessons can be booked if necessary. If you enjoy boat trips, try an excursion from the marina or visit the Algarve’s Big Game Fishing Centre.
The resort also has an excellent selection of designer boutiques, shoe stores, sports outlets, perfumeries and jewelers. At nearby Loule, you can visit the Saturday market and browse the colourful stalls selling fresh local produce and traditional handicrafts. A little further afield at Guia near Albufeira, you will find the huge Algarve Shopping centre which has over one hundred shops selling a wide range of luxury goods and clothes. Algarve Shopping also has a hypermarket, bowling alley and a multi screen cinema screening films in English with subtitles. Another popular attraction at Guia is the ocean theme park, ZooMarine, or you can visit the Slide and Splash or Aqualand water parks nearby.
The capital city of the Algarve, Faro, is a short drive away and has a maze of pedestrianised streets and interesting historical buildings.
