Villa Shiloh is situated on the south-west coast in the resort of Cala Galdana, which is considered the most treasured area of Menorca, and is referred to locally as ‘the queen of the coves.’ The sheltered turquoise water laps the shore of the horseshoe-shaped beach here where a backdrop of limestone cliffs, covered in natural vegetation, surround the picturesque white sands that sweep across the bay. The beach of Cala Galdana offers tourists plenty of attractions, with snorkelling, scuba diving, various water sports, cycling or simply exploring the coastal paths on foot. There are also chartered boat tours allowing you to explore the many coves and secluded beaches along the meandering coastline.
Cala Galdana is situated at the opening of the Algendar Gorge which creates a dramatic rocky landscape surrounding Galdana apartments and the local area.
The nearby town of Ferreries is the highest town in Menorca and is situated next to s’Enlusa, which is the island’s second highest mountain. Ferreries is 7 kilometres north of the Cala Galdana coast and 150 metres above sea level, making it an ideal starting point for those whishing to embark on a hike up s’Enlusa, or to explore the countryside. The town itself is very quiet, although there is a market held by farmers every Tuesday and Friday with plenty of local produce on sale.
The historic town of Ciutadella, 22 kilometres north-west of Cala Galdana, was once the original capital of Menorca before it was moved to Mahon, and is still considered the religious centre of the island. Ciutadella captures the architectural influences of the many nations who have captured and conquered the island throughout its history, and visitors to the area are often overawed with the town’s colourful mixture of heritage, culture and activity. The town is a maze of narrow streets and larger avenues, with traditional shops and cosmopolitan cafes, bars, restaurants and museums, offering something different for every tourist’s needs.
The island’s historical capital, Mahon, is 35 kilometres from Galdana apartments on the eastern side of Menorca, and is home to the world’s second deepest natural harbour (Maó). Boat charters from here are the best way to tour the area and learn about some of its fascinating history as well. This historical port flows with ships and yachts during the day which contribute to the great scenic views of the harbour. There are also many interesting buildings and ruins within the city, places of architectural and historical importance, and several museums detailing the island’s long and celebrated history. The city itself offers a wide range of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants, and comes to life at night. The largest concentration of busy clubs and bars can be found near the main port here, and alternatively for those who prefer something different, there are a number of live music venues in and around the harbour.
