Location
Villa Stratos and neighbouring Villa Constantina (also available to rent if you are a large party or two families travelling together) occupy an elevated position in a countryside setting just outside the village of Megala Horafia, with lovely mountain and sea views. The village is a short walk away and has three tavernas in its village square and a useful mini-market for your immediate needs. There are sandy beaches within a short drive along the shore of Souda Bay, the nearest being Kalives Beach.
The city of Chania, 14km from the villa has a lovely seaside setting, below the dramatic White Mountains. The lively harbour is lined with cafes and boats that bob gently in the waters. This is a nice strolling ground where you can watch fisherman sort their catches as skinny cats poke around the harbour hoping to catch titbits. Or you can explore the maze of narrow streets and alleyways, full of shutter-covered windows and overhanging balconies brimming with colourful plants. Renowned as one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, Chania has a chequered history with its architecture reflecting the tastes of past conquerors including the Venetians, Turks and Germans. A regular market takes place in its distinctive cross-shaped covered market place where you can browse the stall for local fresh produce and handicrafts.
Western Crete is a beautiful mountainous region dominated by the White Mountains or Lefka Ori which peak at 2500km and fall dramatically to the sea in the south with deep gorges attracting scores of hikers. There are numerous ruins and ancient monasteries to explore such as the nearby extensive ancient ruins of the Turkish fort Aptera, only 2 km from the villa. The ruins include aqueducts and a bath house, the large excavation here is still being carried out as archaeologists attempt to discover the secrets of this large site.
Somewhat further afield near Heraklion in the west, is the famous archaeological site of the ancient Knossos Palace. This palatial ruin dates back to 2000-1350BC but was mainly inhabited during the Minoan civilization when local tradition states it housed King Minos, who released the Minotaur into the Labyrinth. This incredible site has been partially restored with copies of original frescoes and some stunning architecture to see.
