Guide to Puerto Calero

At a glance

Puerto Calero is on the south-west coast of Lanzarote, 2km south of Puerto del Carmen and only 10km from Arrecife airport. Puerto Calero is an exclusive development founded by developer Jose Calero in 1986 and is a luxury marina surrounded by high class hotels and prestigious villas.

Great care has been taken during construction to conserve the area’s natural beauty. Roads are bordered by plants and terraces created out of natural stone, and palm trees and geraniums line the port.

Sitting at one of the bars and restaurants that surround the marina, you are afforded some stunning views of one of the best harbours on the island. The harbour (also known as Millionaire’s harbour) is the perfect place to enjoy a sophisticated evening meal or drink at the shore-side. If you prefer to take advantage of what the marina has on offer, there are some popular catamaran trips, submarine excursions and a variety of sport-fishing trips where you can try your skill at landing Blue-Fin Tuna or Marlin – or even shark, for the more adventurous. For those who prefer to be in the water rather than on it, there are a couple of dive schools offering instruction and equipment for both beginners and advanced divers.

Shopping centres around a few designer boutiques but there are some up-market tourist souvenir shops. For a larger selection, Puerto del Carmen is the nearest large shopping centre. Plans for the construction of a new golf course are underway, and Puerto Calero now has a whale and dolphin museum.

Although there is no beach at Puerto Calero, the famous white Papagayo beaches are just along the shoreline and neighbouring Puerto del Carmen is a hive of beach activity with a wide selection of water sports.

Useful Info

Villas to Go recommended beaches…

  • Playa Grande A long beach facing the busy resort of Puerto del Carmen with golden sand and stunning scenery. Conveniently situated next to the Avienda de Las Playas, the resort’s main road which is lined with bars, restaurants and shops. The beach is very popular in the height of the season and has ligeguards, showers, changing areas, washrooms, hammocks, sunshades, boats and water sports equipment.
  • Playa de Matagorda At the eastern edge of Puerto del Carmen, this beach is quieter and has fewer facilities.
  • Los Pocillos Part of the development of the same name. More than a kilometre long, the high tide leaves pools on its flat surface. It can be windy here, but the waters are calm, so wind surfing conditions are ideal. There are a good selection of restaurants and shops, as well as showers, first aid and sunshades for hire.
  • Playa Chica A beautiful rocky coved beach adjacent to Puerto del Carmen Old Town. Host to a variety of sporting activities, here you can take diving lessons, rent jet skis, go parasailing or just snorkel.
  • Take time to go…
  • Explore La Gerja and visit the Bodegas of this wine-growing valley. Sample the Malvasia wine produced here, made from one of the oldest known varieties of grape, and see the strange horse-shoe shaped stone constructions called Los Zocos that the vines grow in.
  • Have a day out to Arrecife and visit the former castle of San Jose, now an art gallery with a restaurant designed by famous local artist Cesar Manrique. Behind the main street is El Charco with a small lake created by incoming tides and an assortment of whitewashed houses.
  • Take the children to Lanzarote a Caballo, a 10 minute drive from resort, and go horse-riding or take a tour on a camel!
  • Take a trip on a luxury catamaran off the coast and search for dolphins and whales. Sit on the deck and enjoy a drink, or go on a swim in the crystal waters, or just relax with the sun on your face.
  • Visit the César Manrique Foundation and view some of the famous local artist’s work on a spectacular large estate built on volcanic bubbles.
  • Discover the Cueva de los Verdes (Green Caves), part of an underground cave system formed 3000 years ago during the eruptions of Monte Corona. Once used to hide from pirates, the caves have the longest volcanic tunnel in the world.
  • Explore the Fire Mountains and drip water into the boiling earth and watch it explode. Finish the visit with a barbeque at the restaurant in the Timanfaya National Park, where your food will be chargrilled on the heat of the volcano.
  • Take a trip to El Golfo, on the western coast – a breathtaking green lagoon set in the black sand.
