Guide to Puerto Del Carmen Self Catering Holidays

Puerto del Carmen is the main holiday resort on the south coast of Lanzarote, and is only a 15 minute drive rom the island’s capital of Arrecife.

Originally a fishing village, the picturesque harbour at the southern end of the resort is home to some great fish restaurants which provide excellent freshly caught fare and traditional Canarian cuisine. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxing, and the cobbled streets and the tapas bars of the old quarter remind you of another era.

The resort has expanded in recent years, and now stretches for 6km along the coastal road. Strict planning restrictions have prevented the construction of the high-rise blocks which blight some foreign shorelines, and the resort is large but remains picturesque. Running along the beaches, the Avenida de las Playas is a promenade lined with hundreds of restaurants, bars and cafes, ice-cream parlours, amusement arcades and shops. International cuisine and fast food is plentiful here, if you prefer something familiar rather than traditional.

The nightlife in Puerto del Carmen is varied and there is a spectrum of things on offer. Several restaurants overlooking the ocean offer romantic meals for two. There are karaoke and sports bars for those seeking something a little livelier and several bars offer live music. It you are interested in dancing the night away, the Centro Atlantico is the place to head for: the discos here stay open to the early hours. There is such a range of choice that you are bound to find something to suit your tastes.

All the beaches in Puerto del Carmen’s have been awarded the Blue Flag for cleanliness. The main sandy beach, the Playa Grande, gently shelves into the ocean, making it a good spot for families with young children.

For sun worshippers, this is a beautiful beach to bake in the sun. Sunbeds and parasols can be hired for a reasonable cost at various places along the beaches. Further smaller rocky coves are dotted along the coastline for those seeking something more private. There are a number of windsurfing and diving schools in Puerto del Carmen offering equipment hire and lessons, as the coastline offers the perfect conditions for both these sports. Swimming, running and cycling are also popular in resort, with several bike hire companies along the promenade.

Shopping is excellent in and around the resort, and international chains such as Zara and Mango can be found here, offering good prices because the goods are tax-free.

The souvenir shops tend to be on the promenade, but the Biosfera shopping centre offers a more upmarket selection including duty-free electronics, local arts and crafts and luxury designer clothes and shoes.
The Fiesta de Carmen erupts into colourful life at the end of July and is in honour of the town’s patron saint. Folklore performances, singing and dancing lasts well into the early hours.

Finally specially decorated fishing boats are put out to sea as a prayer for good catches in the coming year.

The resort is ideally situated for exploring the island because of its relatively central location.

Our villas are situated a short walk or a short drive from all local amenities, but all are conveniently placed to take advantage of all the things this popular resort has to offer.
