Guide to Frigiliana

At a glance

Frigiliana is a quaint whitewashed village on the slopes of the Sierra de Tejeda, just outside Nerja with spectacular panoramic views of the sea.

Voted the ‘prettiest village in Andalucia’ by the Spanish Tourism Authority, Frigiliana is a maze of narrow cobbled streets lined with sugar cube houses and wrought iron balconies spilling colourful flowers. Village bars and restaurants hide in shaded plazas and play host to visitors keen to sample the locally produced wine. The shops are full of ceramics with distinctive Arab designs. Historically important, Frigiliana was strategic in the defeat of defeat of the Moors in 1569. The hill houses remains of a fort where Moors threw themselves from the ramparts rather than be captured by the Spanish, and reputedly their bones and weapons still lie in the scrub of El Fuerte hill.

Our villas are in the countryside surrounding this beautiful village, all of them within easy reach of the facilities on offer, and a few kilometers from the local beach.

Useful Info

Local beaches…

  • Playa Burriana, Nerja - Nerja has 16km of beaches with grainy white sand and crystal blue water. Playa Burriana is the largest and most famous beach in the area, and is also the most commercial. Fine white sand and pebbles, palm umbrellas and sun-beds for hire, beachside bars and restaurants are all features. Plenty of water sports and activities are available including introductory scuba diving and day cruises along the coast.
  • Playa Torrecilla, Nerja - Torrecilla is located close to the town centre and has undergone substantial renovation to make the area wider. As a result the sea is very calm, making it an ideal beach for families with young children. The water is clean, warm and shallow and there are many watersports on offer including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. You can hire sun-beds and umbrellas.
  • Maro Beach, Nerja - Maro is small and access is not good – it is quite a trek to get down there - but the effort is worth it for a lovely sandy bay with clear blue sea.
