Guide to Las Americas

At a glance

Playa de Las Americas is a tourist mecca built in the late 1960’s which is located on the south coast of Tenerife.

The main daytime attraction of the resort is the spectacular long white sand beach, which is perfect for swimming and sunbathing and offers a comprehensive selection of water sports – including jet skiing, wind-surfing and paragliding. There are a further five beaches which stretch along this area of the coast, some of which have the native black sand associated with the Canary Islands, and there are numerous bays and coves for those who prefer a little seclusion. The long promenade which meanders along the seafront starts at neighbouring Los Cristianos and continues west to La Caleta. This promenade is lined with restaurants, bars and shops where you can find virtually everything that you will need for a villa holiday in the sun. The port, Puerto Colon is the place to catch a tourist boat on a whale and dolphin seeking excursion in the waters between Tenerife and La Gomera.

Nightlife in Las Americas is famous for being lively and loud, particularly on the Veronicas Strip, which is lined with sports bars with satellite television, and nightclubs offering all night partying. Karaoke, cocktails, impersonators, quiz nights and cabaret are the order of the day. There are some more laid back bars, but those looking for a more sedate nightlife would probably prefer neighbouring Los Cristianos. The food on offer is a mixture of local and international, and there is probably something to suit everyone – from Chinese or Moroccan to Indian; paella and tapas to traditional English breakfasts.

There are a number of activities on offer, as you would expect from a large established resort. There is a golf course on the way to Los Cristianos, tennis courts, a go-karting track, a water park and horse and camel rides nearby. For the more adventurous, bungee-jumping is available at Sky Park.

Shopping is varied in the resort. There are a number of electrical and clothing stores, as well as a whole host of shops catering for tourists. Supermarkets sell well-known brands, many imported for the British tourists who flock there every year.

A popular tourist trip out of Playa de Las Americas is a visit to Mount Teide, a 3717m high volcano which offers spectacular views of an incredible lunar landscape. For those wishing to see some of the beautiful scenery that the island has to offer, on the northwest tip of the island is the picturesque village of Masca, set in the Teno Mountains. Set by a green ravine, along a road with a number of alarming hairpin bends, the village was once a pirate’s hiding place and has only recently become accessible by road. On the east coast just south of Santa Cruz, there are six mysterious pyramids which baffle archaeologists. Originally believed to be agricultural terraces or random stone piles of early settlers, nowadays there are believed to be links with ancient Mesopotamia and Peru.
